What's up with Honda?

Seriously. Just look at the line up on American Honda's web site. This is a combination of 2009 and 2010 models.
  • 2 touring bikes
  • 5 cruisers
  • 1 "crossover"
  • 1 motard
  • 2 dual sports
  • 3 sport bikes
  • 5 scooters
FIVE scooters? What country are we in again? This is the land of leather, loud pipes and pudding bowl helmets covered in those cute little stickers with clever sayings like "Boobies make me smile" or "This is America so why do I have to press #1 for English". Americans don't want practical transportation. We want chrome, flames and stupidly long wheel bases... and low seats. That's right, the lower the better. That's what's important. Who cares about fuel mileage or the ability to carry a few grocery bags.

Why the hell does Honda have as many scooters on offer as cruisers? I can't think that Honda would jump so far in to the step through market if they didn't think there was some future in it. There are lots of very smart people at Honda who know how to make money. Could this be the start of something small?

While I personally am happy to see the plethora of cruiser-style bikes - especially those with less-than-optimal mechanical appointments like drum brakes, carbs, etc., go the way of the do-do and pare down the market segment to a more manageable selection, the fact that Honda - once the world leader in motorcycles - has clearly lost vision and focus... it's very, very sad.

You're probably right but I hope Honda sees something in the market that everyone else is missing.
